Christ-Centered Focus, Philippians 1

Paul’s perspective in Philippians 1 is remarkable.  Here is a man who is focused on Jesus.   Whatever Paul did, he did it for Jesus.  His aim was to honor Jesus Christ.  So, if Paul was in prison, it was about Jesus.  If he was out of prison, it was about Jesus.  If he was going to die, it’s for Jesus.  His whole world revolved around Jesus Christ.  Whatever situation he was in, Paul intended to show up for Jesus Christ.

Three times in Philippians 1:18b-26, Paul states that his goal is to honor Jesus Christ.  Verse 20.  “That with full courage now as always Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.”  Verse 21.  “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”  And verse 26.  He says, “So that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus.”

This is Christocentric living.   And he challenges the Philippians to live with this same perspective.  Verse 27.

“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel” (NIV update).
