I am about half and half on this. A youth pastor’s first reponsibility is to the youth. While a knowledge and understanding of the Word are vital, the time, effort, and focus that would be taken up could very easily be of detriment to the time, effort, and focus that should go into serving the youth. On the flip side of the issue; we should never stop learning. There is a plethora of materials available that can assist in your growth and learning with out dedicating yourself to another degree.

I tend to think that it’s overkill. Ph. D. is for folks who want to serve/work within the academic arena.
